The Longest Night

Each Friday I write a short story in exactly 55 words. If you'd like to join in the fun and games, write your story, visit G-Man and let him know you've posted.

Sandra tossed and turned, their bed felt enormous.

Mark sat upright in the dark. He was exhausted but the discomfort from the tubes and the constant beeping from machines keeps him awake. Their thoughts were with each other. Forty years of marriage, this their first night apart. It was the longest night of their lives.

My Dad had to spend the night in the hospital earlier in the week. I knew he was going to be OK but I tossed and turned all night worrying about how my parents were coping with being separated. They are practically joined at the hip. Anyway, we all made it through the night and Dad is recovering nicely.

Have a great weekend all and don't forget to tell the people you care about how much you love them.

Love KB

  6. Sometimes, if you're lucky, the hospital will let you stay on a cot in the same room. I couldn't because I had to go home and take care of my kids, but at least they offered.

  13. Solid, good work.

I noticed that you like mainstream horror fiction - may want to check out Joe Hill's novels: he writes like his father, Stephen King, when King was still great (that is, in the years preceding 1985), and may be even better than King ever was.

  16. Those nights are rough, I'm so thankful that your dad is okay! That's hard when couples are so close. It's also very sweet, too.
