Happy Anniversary Day, Auckland

Hi my friends,
Whitesnake and I are enjoying a relaxing long weekend as Auckland celebrates Anniversary Day. The actual Auckland Anniversary Day is tomorrow - 29th January,  but today is a public holiday so Auckland can enjoy a long weekend.

I've been thankful to have the day off every year since I moved to New Zealand, without really knowing much about it . As I moved here in 1984, I decided it was long overdue that I  I learned about what I was celebrating. So here goes...
Explorer and first governor of New Zealand - William Hobson arrived in New Zealand in 1840 and signed a treaty with the Maori people, which led to New Zealand becoming a new British colony. Hobson founded Auckland later the same year and named it the capital of New Zealand. A small regatta was held in Auckland that year and by the following year, the regatta and Auckland Anniversary Day, (the date Hobson first spotted New Zealand) was established.
Apparently,  'the regatta is the largest one-day event of its kind in the world and is the central attraction of Auckland Anniversary Day.'  I found very interesting as I live in Auckland and don't remember hearing anything about this large event but Goggle informs me of these facts, so it must be true!
So instead of attending the regatta with our fellow Aucklanders, Whitesnake and I made our own fun. Drinks, home made pizza and laughs were shared with a friend on Friday night.  I knew I'd had a fabulous night the following morning when it took me a few seconds to remember how to drive my car.

Last night didn't go as well, I drank too much wine and yelled at my husband for no reason. My husband is the kindest, most generous. loving person on the planet so as you can imagine, I'm feeling incredibly guilty and have vowed to never drink the evil red wine again.

I intend to spend the rest of the long weekend grovelling, relaxing and NOT touching a drop of red wine.
Happy Anniversary Day, Auckland!

Auckland Botanic Gardens

Hi everyone,

I attended a meeting at Auckland Botanic Gardens and was surprised how close this gorgeous place was to my home. I'll definitely be going back with my camera to photograph the beautiful gardens.

It's a beautiful day in Auckland so Whitesnake and I decided to go for a drive to the beach to enjoy the sunshine and some fish and chips. I'll share the pics in a couple of days for Weekend Walkabout. Hope you are all well.

Here's our recipe for today...Simply Delish Almond, Chicken and Asparagus Salad.

Busy Day

I've been going a bit stir crazy this week, having conversations with my dog is all well and good but when I started to imagine how she would reply,I realized it was time to get out and interact with the human folk!!!!!

It was a gorgeous day, the sun was shining, you'd never know it was winter time. I met my friend for brunch. We used to work together at the bank, she filled me in on all the gossip. Sounds like things haven't changed much. I'm still really happy I left that place but I do miss my workmates and some of my customers.

A friend of mine who lives overseas recently bought an apartment in Auckland. He asked me if I would mind taking some pics of the place next time I was in the city. I decided to head into town to check it out.

I found the place easily and started snapping away. I must have looked strange, taking pics of this building from different angles. Especially when a guy appeared on his balcony IN A TOWEL!!!!! Yikes, I must have looked like a right stalker.

Took the scenic route home via the waterfront. Here's a pic for ya.

PHOTO NO LONGER AVAILABLE

The drive home took an hour....arrrgggggg. I'd forgotten it was Queen's Birthday weekend. Every man and his dog had obviously decided it was P.O.E.T.S day (Piss Off Early Tomorrow's Saturday)and time to get out of Auckland for a few days. I still find it rather amusing that NZ gets a day off to clebrate the Queen's birthday but the English don't. Any excuse for a day off and the Kiwis will take it.

Had a fun filled evening with my parents. I laughed so much my sides ached. Headed home for a chat with one of my on line buddies. Before I knew it, it was four am and way past bed time.
A wonderful day.
