Flash 55 - Quake Zone

An almighty roar wakes them, the room shakes violently, books fly from shelves. They stumble around in the darkness, searching for safe haven. Sam barks urgently as he runs between the two of them. His instincts tell him they must flee from their former sanctuary. Rumblings stop, the house is still, but for how long?

Inspired by the tragic events which have taken place this past week in New Zealand. Christchurch experienced a 7.1 magnitude quake in the early hours of Saturday morning. There has been major damage to many buildings but thankfully no fatalities. The City is still experiencing after shocks and may continue to do so for some time. New Zealand consists of the North and South Islands, the quake hit Christchurch ,which is located in the South Island. Steve and I live in the North Island so we are far from the danger but a big thank you to all who have enquired after our welfare. My thoughts are with everyone in Christchurch, especially dear Marja.

Here are some pics of the damage.

  3. No fatalities, that is an amazing blessing. I had a penpal in ChristChurch but I've not spoken to her in years.

I remember a 4.0 in college, and I was 200 miles from the eipcenter. Still, it got my attention!

This gave me chills. Poor doggie.

  5. it seems a miracle that a quake which caused so much damage took no lives. truly a thing to be thankful for though the lingering fear and uneasiness is quite understandable.

  7. We had the slightest earthquake here last month (5.0) and it was just tremors and NOTHING like what they are going through in Christchurch which must have been terrifying. I have friends in New Zealand, but no one in that area. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected. Last I heard no one had died - I hope that is still true. The loss of homes and businesses is tragic enough without the loss of irreplaceable human lives. I hope your friend is okay!

  8. Yes we heard all about that on the news here in Australia...it must have been terribly frightening for everyone at the centre of it but thankfully there was no loss of life due to the great contruction of the building in NZ.
Your 55 describes so well what those affected would have been feeling.
Thank you for visiting my blog & leaving a comment..it's greatly appreciated.

  9. I am so happy that there were no serious injuries. I have a dear friend in Christchurch who I met many years ago on a cruise from Sydney to Auckland...a government agricultural inspector. He's been here several times inspecting grapes imported from San Francisco to NZ. He called me the day of the quake to say all was well with him and his family!

  16. Living in Michigan, we don't get many earthquakes - just the occasional minor tremor. But there was fairly large one (for Michigan) on a Saturday morning that I distinctly felt. I didn't realize it was an earthquake at the time, but when I saw the news report that night I knew.

Way to 'shake things up' for the weekend, KB!
