Poetry: MISSING YOU

As I was perusing my favourite blogs earlier, I noticed a challenge over at real toads to write a flash 55 to keep the memory of our dear friend Galen alive. Galen originally hosted this fun challenge and his posts and comments made me laugh so much. I decided to repost this 55 which I wrote over ten years ago and if you read the comments you will see G-Man being his amusing self. If I remember correctly, his 55 was regarding toilet humour that week. Miss you buddy.

P.S. This poem was written about my husband. We met, he went back to Australia, he came back, we got married...it's complicated, hehe.

When you're away my life feels wrong.
My only company wine and song.
I count down the days until you return.
The art of patience, something to learn.

When we're together the time flies.
Love and laughter, mischief in our eyes.
Nobody understands me, like you do.
Sometimes I believe we are one, not two.

Don't Mess With Me

Each Friday I write a short story in exactly 55 words. Atually, I haven't written a 55 for a while. Thanks for the reminder G. If you'd like to join in the fun and games, write your story, visit G-Man and let him know you've posted.

Every day was the same. She waited alone, after school, at the bus stop.

'Hey, big nose.'

The girls poked and taunted her. She couldn't take it anymore. She strode proudly onto the bus, sat next to the ring leader and whispered in her ear.

'Bring it on. I'm ready.'

They never bothered her again.

Have a great weekend all. See you tomorrow for Simply Delish.

The Pike River 29

Here's my contribution to FF55, brought to us by the wonderful G-Man.

29 men lost their lives recently in my country in a mining disaster. I didn't realise how much the deaths of strangers could affect me until I watched the remembrance service yesterday. My thoughts are with the families and the residents of Greymouth.

Photo NZPA

Taken from their families too soon
A nation grieves for their loss
Remembrance released tears
A table dedicated to each man
Pictures of loves lost
Notes and drawings from fatherless children
The two minutes silence brought chills
A town standing still but they must move on
Leaving their men to rest in their tomb below

See you tomorrow for Simply Delish

Flash 55 - Quake Zone

An almighty roar wakes them, the room shakes violently, books fly from shelves. They stumble around in the darkness, searching for safe haven. Sam barks urgently as he runs between the two of them. His instincts tell him they must flee from their former sanctuary. Rumblings stop, the house is still, but for how long?

Inspired by the tragic events which have taken place this past week in New Zealand. Christchurch experienced a 7.1 magnitude quake in the early hours of Saturday morning. There has been major damage to many buildings but thankfully no fatalities. The City is still experiencing after shocks and may continue to do so for some time. New Zealand consists of the North and South Islands, the quake hit Christchurch ,which is located in the South Island. Steve and I live in the North Island so we are far from the danger but a big thank you to all who have enquired after our welfare. My thoughts are with everyone in Christchurch, especially dear Marja.

Here are some pics of the damage.

Flash 55 - Family Secrets

Horrified to learn his great grandmother had spent most of her life enslaved, he cursed and judged the man who’d been her Master. Later, he discovered his family on his father’s side had been slave traders. Not only was he shocked by his family history but how quickly he’d judged his own flesh and blood.

Inspired by a true story from  the TV Show Who Do You Think You Are?

Flash 55 - Harry Down

Dad and Steve arrived at the takeaway shop to place their order. The shop owner has trouble understanding English. She asked Dad what name to put the order under and because my Dad’s surname is hard to pronounce, he replied, ‘Just put Harry down.’

A short time later… ‘Harry Down, order ready for Harry Down.’

FLASH 55

Two sides
to every story
One party
strives for glory

Emotional blackmail
confuses the heart
Constant control
keeps you apart

Deceit and lies
become the heroes
Empathy and love
totaling zero

The battle is short
one side victorious
But life is long
people are curious

Another scenario
begins to unfold
The true story
finally told

FLASH 55

I didn't post a 55 this week as I was a little under the weather. My other half has posted his first 55 in my honour. What a sweetheart!

FLASH 55

'I’m preparing a family lunch but I forgot dessert. The shops are shut for Easter, lunch will be ruined,' she sobbed.

The stranger placed his arm around her to give some comfort. She turned to thank him. His face was filthy and his clothes torn. A gentle reminder of the true meaning of Easter.

HAPPY EASTER

Easter in NZ is becoming like Christmas. Everyone is rushing around buying chocolate , stocking up the cupboards because the shops will be closed for a few days, packing up the car to escape for a while. In other words...stressing out! Slow down people. Do something nice for someone, tell somebody you love them, celebrate life, think of someone other than yourself for a change. Isn't that what the spirit of Easter is really about?

FLASH 55

Early years, caring for others,
casting her needs aside.
Mind and body in their prime,
ticking clock far from her mind.
His relief, as each month passes,
her desperation hidden inside.
Brimming with wisdom, bursting with love,
she welcomes her second chance.
But her body grows weak, time marches on,
Mother Nature will finally decide.

FLASH 55 - LOOKING FOR LOVE

ATTRACTIVE FEMALE LOOKING FOR COMPANIONSHIP. I enjoy walks on the beach, cuddles, good food and lounging around in bed. I speak my mind and if I don't like you, you'll know about it. My dislikes include; people telling me what to do, where to go and when to be quiet.

Contact Coco - Misunderstood Cocker Spaniel.

N.B. Thought I'd add a little note after reading some of the comments. Coco was barking this morning. I couldn't see what the fuss was about so I told her to be quiet. The look on her face was priceless...almost as if she was thinking, "Why does Mum tell me off for barking? I am a dog after all." Looked like she was ready to pack her bags. LOL. Don't worry, she's not going anywhere and we love each other to bits.

FLASH 55

He perused his bookshelf, hoping to distract his mind. He'd always been healthy so why was death continuously in his thoughts? He poured a glass of red to calm his nerves. The shrilling phone startled him .Phew, the hospital had given him the all clear. Time to move his coffin to a less conspicuous place?

An inventor from New Zealand has come up with an original idea for a coffin/book case/wine rack . Buying a coffin before death would be one less thing for loved ones to worry about and getting some use out of it before death would be an added bonus.

I think it's a great idea but being reminded of my death on a daily basis isn't really my cup of tea. I'd have to put mine out of sight.

FLASH 55

I stared at the anonymous comment in disbelief. From a jilted lover? My sources suggested otherwise. I pity someone who can declare such a strong statement of hatred to a complete stranger but is too cowardly to sign their name.

Dear Anon,

Let it go. Find a more constructive way to fill your days.

FLASH 55 - LOVER'S BLOCK

Writing was her way of expressing herself. Replacing loneliness and quiet desperation. Until she met him. He loves and understands her completely. Words to explain this new found happiness escape her. She's used to a darker vocabulary.

"What's the matter babe?" he asks.

"Stop making me so bloody happy so I can write something," she replies.

FLASH 55 - TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

Hubby's 55 - Los Angeles Airport

This Flash 55 is a follow on from last week's wee effort. I'm taking Eaton's advice.

The Air States AX370 crew arrived at the briefing office ten minutes ahead of schedule. They had already heard about tropical cyclone “Felicia” from the inbound crew. A high intensity storm, the epicenter lay 740nm ENE of Oahu, 140nm north of the Tropic of Cancer.
“Hmm, ‘Fellatio’, the big blow" mused the First Officer aloud.

KB's 55

His mind is full of the memory of her. The pounding of her heart as he rests his head on her breast, her intoxicating scent beneath sweet perfume and silky skin welcoming his fingertips.

"I'll return at nightfall my love," she whispers.

His restlessness increases as he awaits sunset.

Being a vampire in love sucks!

FLASH 55 - GHOSTS #3

My story this week is a continuation of a wee tale I began last year.

PREVIOUS 55's

From the darkened room he watches her sleep. He knows every curve of her body, every story behind her many scars.

Finally, his time has come to be a man again, to embrace her, to feel the warmth of her soft lips. Earlier the time traveller had warned him he has but a single day...

She reaches out for him, as she sighs in her dreams. Her beautiful face appears peaceful in sleep. It's difficult to comprehend that this innocent looking woman before him, is the bravest soul he's ever met. She fights the demons willingly at his side but he longs to give her the normal life she deserves.

This weeks continuation...

He's been watching her for hours as he contemplates the day ahead. Should he tell her how it will end? His temples pound from the strain of this difficult decision. He will ensure she enjoys the day, he owes her that. He and a select few will carry the burden of what is to come.

I'LL READ IT TO YOU IF YOU PREFER

FLASH 55

Dad raised her as a normal kid, loved to rough and tumble but mother had other ideas...

'Be careful on that slide, you might fall off.'

'Get out of that tree, you'll hurt yourself.'

'The lift may break down, let's take the stairs.'

The world became a scary place. Is it any wonder she's afraid.

I wrote this one in my head while I was in the shower. It's where I do my best work. Only had to remove one word. Now, if only I could find a way to take my notebook and pencil in the shower and spend all day in there...I'd be able to finish my novel *giggles*

when will it stop
if I cough once more
my head will come off

FLASH 55 - TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

KB's 55

Lazy or hardworking,
depends on the day.
Brave when it counts,
too timid to say.

Keeping secrets,
opening up.
Outwardly humorous,
tears inside well up.

Trusting and believing,
watching my back.
Unflappable in an emergency,
normality brings panic attack.

Aggressively protective,
meekly letting things slide.
Who will I be today...
Dr Jekyll or Mr Hyde?

Hubby's 55

Conflicting emotions
Hidden, trapped for years
Surfacing unwanted, unbidden.
The Stranger within.

Jealousy, anger, frustration, regret.
Heated words, raised voices.
Illogical thoughts.
The Stranger within.

Self doubt, fear of the unknown.
Swirling, destructive negativity.
Rising ire.
The Stranger within.

Disenchanted loved ones, the consequence,
of faulty reasoning.
Loneliness the unavoidable result -
A Stranger without.
